In the last week of August, the people running the Cadiz Restaurant met with the health inspector, Cadiz Fire Chief Josh Holley and an insurance adjuster. Then they built a temporary wall. WKDZ reported that the wall was meant to seal off the fire-damaged coffee shop so the rest of the building could reopen. The plan was to serve from the two undamaged dining rooms and cook in the back kitchen instead of on the open grill up front.
That same week, lightning hit the roof of Windows on the Water at Lake Barkley State Resort Park.
That left Cadiz's restaurant on Main Street and its dining room on the lake both under repair at the same time. Neither was finished as November began. So this holiday season, the gathering shifts to Main Street's sidewalks and storefronts, and the dates below show how.
The Cadiz Restaurant has been a Main Street gathering place for a long time. When WKDZ talked with owner Susie Henry less than three days after the fire, she left no doubt that it would be back. The worst damage was in the coffee shop and the roof. Henry said the building's age and the repair requirements made the work complicated.
The quick reopening depended on inspections and on cutting gas to the damaged section while keeping it on everywhere else. By late October, the restaurant's return was still described as close. At the Trigg County Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting on October 29, Pennyrile Health Department environmentalist Sam Michaud said she had been guiding the restaurant since the night of the fire. WKDZ reported that the restaurant "could soon be back on its feet and open to the public." Michaud said the exact date was unclear but pending.
Even after the doors open, the August plan didn't include the coffee shop. That plan left regulars of the coffee shop looking for somewhere else to sit.
The damage at the lake came during a project that was already underway. The lodge at Lake Barkley State Resort Park is in the middle of a $17 million renovation. WKDZ listed its main pieces as structural repairs, a new roof, safety improvements, renovated walkway canopies, pool work and a new sun terrace overlooking the lake.
The lightning hit the east side of the dining room roof, near an eave where the windows meet the roof on the salad bar side. Park employees put out the fire inside before firefighters from East Golden Pond and Cadiz checked the roof with a drone and a lift. Then-manager Ashley Joiner said the roof had recently been replaced as part of the renovation and would probably need repairs. She did not expect the fire to set the project back significantly.
In June, two months before the fire, Joiner told WKDZ that Windows on the Water would "likely" return before Christmas. The full four-phase renovation is aimed at spring 2027. Food has been served from a temporary space in the convention center, and lodge rooms have been extremely limited since November 2025. Joiner's last day as park director was October 30, according to WKDZ.
Holiday plans at the lake also run into the state's calendar. Under Kentucky State Parks' winter operations schedule, resort parks close after lunch on December 20 and reopen for lunch on December 27. Any Christmas week plans at the lodge fall inside that closure.
That makes Main Street the starting point for the season. The Trigg County Chamber of Commerce's Mingle and Jingle is the first big event on it, held downtown around 61 Main Street. The Chamber's registration notice, published on WKDZ's events calendar, sets it up this way:
The Cadiz-Trigg County Tourist Commission's listing shows Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22. The Chamber's own notice names Friday and Saturday.
The Magic Bags get top billing in the Chamber's notice:
You never know what magic might be inside the bag you receive. Just like snowflakes, no two bags are guaranteed to be the same.
The event is built around a shared map. Any business or organization can get on it for $35, and Chamber membership isn't required. Chamber members and friends who asked for pop-up vendor space can join for the same price. That opens the weekend to everyone along Main Street, not only Chamber members.
The map has more to cover than it did a year ago. Two of Main Street's newer businesses are having their first holiday season downtown.
57 Main Antiques opened on Main Street on June 2, 2026. Owners Cindy Hogan and Kelly Selfe had been running vendor booths at Cadiz Antique Mall before opening their own storefront, WKDZ reported.
The Mason Jar moved into a larger downtown space on April 11, 2026, adding more vendors and Be Happy Coffee. The station covered the move in a June profile of owner Tammy Mason's shop. With the Cadiz Restaurant's coffee shop still walled off, Main Street's newest coffee counter is inside The Mason Jar.

The Christmas parade became a city event two years ago. In October 2024, the Trigg County Chamber handed coordination to the City of Cadiz, as WKDZ reported. Last year shows how early things get decided. The 2025 parade's theme was "Christmas at the North Pole." Judging started at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2025, and entries closed November 26, the day before Thanksgiving. WKDZ's parade day coverage described daytime events leading up to the 6 p.m. start. If last year's schedule repeats, groups building a float would need their entries in before Thanksgiving.
The year ends at one of Cadiz's oldest buildings. The Tourist Commission calendar lists a New Year's Eve Masquerade at The Red Brick Inn and Boyd's Tavern on December 31. The listing calls the inn 225 years old and promises masks, candlelight, food, cocktails and live entertainment. Space is limited to 50 guests.
Between the Magic Bags in November and the masquerade at year's end, the town's two familiar tables are working toward reopening. One is behind a temporary wall on Main Street. The other has a new roof that needs repairs.
